Tales from Off-Peak City Vol. 1

A quick heist with cover as a pizza maker. Seems simple. Except you’re in a far fringe part of tangled city… and at the edges of the rules of reality itself. Channeling hip-hop magical surrealist (if I can coin a phrase) imagery and a deep, almost paranoic suspicion of the academic experimental music, and the format of a cinematic thriller, Tales from Off-Peak City Vol. 1 creates an intense, literary jaunt. Talking buildings, a saxophone that might be a force that can change the world, a hell of a lot of analog film to play with, and you still have to pull off your pizza deliveries and discover why more and more residents of this restitched neighborhood that the supposedly-upright parts of the city try to forgot keep disappearing into a cryptic factory. Coming in at about the length of a movie or novella, with the focus exclusively on exploration, unexpected imagery, and off-kilter conversation, this is a brilliant game for all arts audiences, regardless of familiarity with traditional video game win conditions (though it does require using a keyboard and mouse movement scheme.) You could slap this into a book club or high school lit lesson with ease.
