VGU CurrentLab

It’s easy to forget that only a dozen years ago, there were basically no collegiate video game creation degrees, even for the most commercial of career paths. Thus, it’s no surprise that video games creation for artists is still a mostly unexplored educational space. Luckily, for both teachers and students, there are a few institutions that are exploring classes and digital workshops, including VCU’s CurrentLab. They offer a number of Creative Commons licensed lab modules based on the Game Maker system, for self-directed learning on the topic of game creation (including physical games) for the arts. Their “Introduction to Digital Game Design as Art” is a perfect onboarding tool for educators and curious creators, with both class material lists and a list of conversation-starting examples of the form. Other learning modules include: “Creating and Traversing Virtual Spaces”, “Mechanics as Metaphor”, “Making and Moving in the Real World: Physical Computing”, and “Nondigital Games”.
